The Pursuit of a Flawless Brand
By Marybeth Starr
Perfect is the goal, the myth, the pinnacle and the ultimate BS. Yep, it’s true, I said it and you know it. There are so many ways we can sabotage our businesses, but one of the most outstanding ways is to try to reach a “perfect” stage before you even start. We don’t have the luxury of perfect. Perfect equals paralysis. The pursuit of a flawless brand, an impeccable product, or a faultless launch can trap us in an endless cycle of tweaks, doubts, and delays—leaving us with nothing to show for it but a pile of unrealized dreams.
Brands aren’t born perfect; they’re built through action. Think about the biggest names out there—none of them started as polished giants. They stumbled, they iterated, they grew. A brand is a living thing, shaped by real-world feedback, not a pristine statue carved in isolation. Waiting for perfection means missing the chance to connect, to learn, and to evolve. The imperfect first step is where real magic happens—it’s the spark that turns an idea into something tangible.
Ditch the myth of perfect. Launch that product with a few rough edges. Set the sales team free to bring something new and fresh to their clients. Share that logo that’s “good enough” for now. Let your brand breathe and find its footing in the wild, wild world. Customers don’t need perfection—they need authenticity and momentum. Done is better than perfect, because done gets you started, and started gets you somewhere. Embrace the flaws; they’re the cracks where your story shines through. And who doesn’t have a ‘let me tell you about the time we….’ story. Those are the good ones that get told over and over.
